In 1881, he is 21 and a sign writer and painter living at the Laurie Arms with his sister and her husband.
By 1891, he is aged 33 and living at the music shop in Victoria Road. He is still a sign writer.

Richard married Henrietta Burch in 1882 in Bethnal Green district. (Henrietta Burch was born about 1857 in East Bergholt.)
