   Another name for Josiah was Josiah.

  General Notes:

Joseph shows up in the 1861 census in Tarling, with Jane and his two children. All are shown as being born in Essex n k (not known?) The later hints at daughter Esther being either from Boreham or Terling may offer up some clues as to where her parents originate from.
In 1891, Joseph & Jane reappear and Joseph is shown as born in Great Tey. They are living at number 6 Warley Road, in Upminster.
In 1881, by searching for Jack Beard, Joseph shows up as Josia, married to Jane and living on the common, Upminster. Excellent.
In 1871, Josiah and family are in Chappel, living at Offins Cottage. He ia an ag labourer aged 40.
I now have a copy of some of the 1851 index which shows Josiah, aged 19, born in Aldham, and the younger members are born in West Bergholt.
The 1841 census for West Bergholt is very unclear, but on the first page can be made clearly a James aged 12, and a Josiah aged maybe 9. There also looks like a Sarah aged 14. The rest of the family is illegible.

Josiah married Jane Harvey, daughter of Elijah Harvey and Ann Smith, on 24 Dec 1858 in Terling. (Jane Harvey was born about 1832 in Terling.)

  Marriage Notes:

The wedding detail shows Josiah Smith Beard , aged 27, a bachelor marrying Jane Harvey, 26, a spinster - both are residents of Terling.Fathers are Joseph Beard (labourer) and Elijah Harvey (shoemaker).
Both Joseph and Jane sign by marks.
