John is my great great grandfather, and is born in Doddinghurst in 1819.
In 1841, he is living at Littlechild cottages, aged 20 with his parents and siblings.
In 1851, he can be found in Kelvedon Hatch at Dodds Farm, with his wife Elizabeth and first son John. He is a farmer of 50 acres employing 3 men. There is also a servant Eliza Harvey, aged 13 living in.
The 1855 Directory also lists him as a Farmer
By 1861, John is a Farmer employing 5 men at Kelvedon Farm, Kelvedon Hatch - he now has built up a large part of his family, plus a kitchen maid , Susan Gosling, aged 14 and a visitor , William King, born in Barking, and aged 40.
About this time, cheap imports due to the railways, US imports etc make many of the farms untenable, and almost worthless. Hence the move to Brentwood by 1871.
There is considerable Kelvedon Hatch history available at:
In 1871, the family name is listed as Littlechilds (note the s), and living in Wellesley Street, Brentwood. John is a Hay Carter, and they have another family lodging with them.
By the 1881 census, Elizabeth is a widow, and John is mort. Dodds Farm now has a new Farm Bailiff, George Barnes living there.
John married Elizabeth Cumbers, daughter of Yeoman George Cumbers and Susanna, in 1847 in St Dunstan, Stepney. (Elizabeth Cumbers was born in 1828 in South Weald and was christened on 11 May 1828 in Doddinghurst.)
