John Cumbers is born in 1830 in Doddinghurst, son of George Cumbers and Susanna. (This is two years before she dies,, and George remaries).
John appears in the 1851 Census for KH, I think he is probably the John Cumbers born 1830 in Doddinghurst.
He is shown as a Bailiff, and also as son-in-law to John Littlechild, who also appears to be his uncle.
He is aged 21, and born in Doddinghurst.
Two boys are christened in Shenfield between 1855 and 1858.
In 1861, John is a farmer of 147 acres employing 5 men and 2 boys. He is at Brick House Farm.
In 1871, he is in Shenfield at Brick House Farm, aged 41; a farmer of 114 acres and employing 4 men and 1 boy.
Right next door on the census is Jeremiah Lagden and Mary.
He is the Hotel Keeper of the '<a href="http://pubcensus.co.uk/essexpubs/Brentwood/lionlamb.aspx">Lion & Lamb Hotel</a>' in Brentwood on the 1881 census.
It is interesting to see the number of farmers who give up farming in this family (and many others) and turn to being a licnsed victusller.
John married Mary Littlechild, daughter of John Littlechild and Sarah Lagden, in 1849 in St Dunstan, Stepney. (Mary Littlechild was born on 28 Sep 1828 in Doddinghurst.)
