The Spread Eagle is the building alongside South Weald church, which is now a private residence. The pub moved across the road about 1878, to what is now the Tower Arms.

The 1891 census shows his age as 32. They are living in Whalebone Lane in 1891 with other Littlechild members John (age 30) & George (age 40) are boarding with them.
The 1901 census shows William as a railway labourer from Kelvedon (Hatch), living at Fowls Cottages, Whalebone Lane, Dagenham. Their lodger at this time (Sydney Andrews) ends up marrying his daughter Rose in 1907
